Kuwabara for his part reacts to the dream with horror, and he's so disturbed by it that he goes to the arcade to unwind from the stress (hurting Yusuke's chances, but fortunately Keiko does make it in time). What makes it even funnier is Yusuke is forced to implant this dream into Kuwabara's head, simply to increase his chances of coming back to life since 2 kisses from either Keiko or Kuwabara is better than just one (Yusuke dismisses his mom outright, because she's a partying drunk that won't be there long enough).

Keiko, his mother, and Kuwabara are the only people he can think of that care that much about him, which in Kuwabara's case says a lot. Back when Yusuke was still dead and needed someone to transfer their life energy into him through the lips, Koenma tells him that only the people that care about him the most can do this for him.

An obvious example is the dream kiss between him and Yusuke.

All of this is played out while Yusuke and Kuwabara are fighting in the classroom like an old married couple. When Kuwabara is seen as the wife he's shown as a house wife, while Yusuke is shown as a mother of a child pushing the baby in a stroller with Kuwabara by her side.

Lampshaded in the anime, when Kuwabara's friend muse they were husband and wife in a past life, and we're subjected to imagine bubbles of Yusuke and Kuwabara alternating between both roles.

It's justified in-universe as Yusuke being very protective of Kuwabara. The focus is definitely on Yusuke's emotional outbursts increasing his reiki and it's usually Kuwabara who is the one who has to get injured in a big way for him to peak. They are the quintessential guys who hate each other becoming best friends. From the premonition of a kiss, to one or the other going full-blown hysterical whenever the other is hurt - except in the instances when they are hurting one another.

The most understated pairing in YYH is Kazuma Kuwabara and Yusuke Urameshi.

Along with Tsukikawa, we have scriptwriter Tatsurō Mishima, VFX supervisor Ryō Sakaguchi, Netflix content acquisition director Kazutaka Sakamoto (live-action Alice in Borderland) working as executive producer, and Akira Morii ( Wild 7, Brave Heart Umizaru) working as producer over at ROBOT.'Who was the husband and who was the wife?' Let Me Eat Your Pancreas is another adaptation that Yusuke’s actor, Takumi Kitamura, was a part of, so he and the director have history together. Last, but not least, is Uesugi, who played Shinichirō Kazama in the recent live-action adaptation of My Boyfriend in Orange.Īccording to Crystalyn Hodgkins over at Anime News Network, Sho Tsukikawa (director of the live-action Let Me Eat Your Pancreas) is directing the series. Meanwhile, Hongō’s been in several live-action anime adaptations, such as Fullmetal Alchemist (as Envy), Attack on Titan (as Armin), and NANA 2 (as Shin). Fans may recognize Shison as the voice of Hibiki in Bubble (which was released back in April) or as Masa in the live-action The Way of the Househusband series. Joining Kitamura, we have Jun Shison as Kurama, Kanata Hongō as Hiei, and Shūhei Uesugi as Kuwabara. It’s that notion that makes me a bit more hopeful about Yu Yu Hakusho, especially when they revealed who’s playing the main protagonist, Yusuke Urameshi. However, live-action anime in Japan? Well … that’s been hit-or-miss, too, to be honest, but I will say that there have been releases that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. Even the productions that looked pretty solid ended up falling flat and, unfortunately, were not given a chance to take the feedback, dust themselves off, and try again.

Live-action anime attempts here in the U.S. What made Yu Yu Hakusho a bit more favorable (not by much, folks were still concerned) was the fact that it was, quote, “assembling a team of the best talent from Japan and abroad.” This was, understandably, met with mixed responses since “Netflix” and “live-action anime adaptation” transports everyone back to 2017, in a bad way, for … reasons.
